Gaucho customs

The gaucho also used to wear a belt like a sash , made of wool, over which he would show another one made of leather, with many decorative coins.

High boots are essential in the gaucho's attire, as well as his shirt with the sleeves rolled up to the elbows, which he wore with his vest and a " tirado " which was a skirt that covered the pants almost completely.

He used to wear a scarf tied around his neck , as a perfect complement to his hat, which he used to protect himself from the sun during work.

In the hand of the gaucho it is common to see the “ rebenque” , a very short whip that was used to stimulate and guide the horses during long rides.

A tool that could not be missing in the life of the gaucho was the traditional " facón" , a large and very sharp knife, which he used to carry at his waist, for the purpose of defense and as a work tool.

The gauchos' culinary culture has left us traditional dishes such as the incomparable charcoal-grilled barbecue, empanadas, the original locro (a highly spiced stew made with corn, grains, potatoes, and meat), as well as pastries and sweet potato jam.


Today, many of the customs of the old gauchos last database are preserved ; rural people in Argentina wear traditional clothing, especially for special celebrations.

Traditions such as enjoying a good mate, sweet or bitter, and sharing succulent cuts of meat roasted over a slow fire are customs that come from the work of the gaucho.

Gauchos are symbols of a typical country man , with a taste for a quiet life, earned through effort, hard work, and perseverance.

They developed impressive skills in horse training , singing songs with their guitars, and enjoying typical Argentine dances .
