The EU is partnering with the Rey Juan Carlos University in Spain, the Saarland University in Germany and the University of Palermo in Italy to integrate diverse academic experiences and expertise in the development of e-learning. Jorge Latorre, Professor of Art History at the Rey Juan Carlos University, explains that DEFEP “has become more necessary than ever. There are areas that are completely devastated and there is not a single building left standing in some universities.”
Project objectives and collaborations
The DEFEP project aims to improve the quality of online higher education in three key areas: establishing new university departments, creating e-learning structures and resources, and providing virtual teaching professional development for university professors. Through this, the project will “contribute to the systematic design of distance education, as a separate independent branch of education, which will develop students’ professional competencies and soft skills, according to the needs of the labor market.”
Collaboration between EU university partners and institutions from Ukraine and Moldova will also foster a viable academic framework. This initiative requires integrating diversity into the virtual classroom. According to Latorre, teachers must “maintain online education, through which European values such as dialogue or the non-violent imposition of national ideas can be transmitted.” This will support an international model of online teaching that can be adapted to the specific economic and social needs of each country – a key objective of DEFEP.
